Act 5 Scene 1

A doctor is at the castle supposedly meant to cure Lady Macbeth of her sickness. Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking however she is talking in her sleep and rubbing her hands. Lady Macbeth believes that there is blood on her hands that will not wash off. She says “Out, damned spot! out” Once again Shakespeare has used blood to symbolise her guilt – she cannot get rid of it. While she is sleep walking she confesses to having something to do with the death of Banquo. The doctor says “this disease is beyond my practice”. He cannot cure her illness because she is not sick, she is mentally unwell.
