Dictatorship
Dictatorship was the most significant theme in the novel “Animal Farm” by George Orwell. This theme was proven to be the most notable as in the book one of the main characters Napoleon used dictatorship to run the farm. This was shown when he expelled snowball, changed the seven commandments and let himself have unfair advantages compared to the other animals.
Dictatorship was shown as a key idea when Napoleon banished Snowball from Animal Farm. Snowball was a “comrade” to all the animals however Napoleon considered him a rival. Napoleon managed to exile Snowball from the farm so he was able to take full control of everything. “I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labour upon himself” this quote shows that, with help from Squealer, Napoleon made the animals believe he was doing something good by becoming the leader of the farm. Although he had banished Snowball from the farm, the animals thought of Napoleon as a suitable leader. I believe this is significant because he was manipulating the animals into believing things they weren’t.
Napoleon was proven to be a dictator when he changed the seven commandments. These commandments were written to suit everyone and to make sure the animals were equal but Napoleon changed them to what benefited him. He changed one commandment stating “all animals are equal” to “all animals are equal, but some more equal than others”. This change proves that he would manipulate the animals to think he was equal to them. Because the animals were too dumb to realise the commandments were being changed, Napoleon was able to change them to whatever benefitted him, without them thinking communism was forgotten. I think this is significant because governments are able to change laws just as Napoleon did.
Throughout the novel Napoleon gave himself unfair advantages compared to the rest of the animals. This is dictatorship because he shows that he is more important and above everyone else. Napoleon took most of the food rations for himself and the pigs meanwhile the rest of the farm had to live in starvation.
